The Department of Information & Cultural Affairs is the nodal agency for all information and public relation activities of the Government of West Bengal. It deals with Press, publicizes the government policies and creates awareness on various socio -economic and cultural issues amongst people. It keeps the Government aware about public reactions.

This department promotes Art and Culture of Bengal. Films and Cable related issues are viewed with this department. It organizes the state ceremonies, festivals, melas and awards distinguished personalities as well as organizations for achieving excellence in the field of Literature, Art & Culture.

Lok Prasar Prakalpo

To revive and showcase the different folk music forms of Bengal, a unique project entitled Lok Prasar Prakalpo which is the brain child of Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, Smt. Mamata Banerjee has spread its wings across the State. Under this project folk artistes between the age of 18 – 60 receive Rs.1000/- per month as Retainer fee. Senior artistes, who are above 60 receive Rs.1000/- per month as Pension. Apart from this, the active performances receive Rs.1000/- as Performance fee per programme. All these are credited to the bank accounts of the folk artistes directly. Photo identity cards have also been issued to the enlisted folk artistes. The folk artistes propagate different unique schemes such as Kanyasree, Yuvasree, Sikshasree etc. through their performances. Health and sanitation messages and messages to build up awareness against evils of dowry, child marriage and trafficking etc. are also being effectively transmitted through these LPP messengers. This project has not only provided economic stability to the folk artistes of Bengal, it has also revived the traditional folk art forms.
