Superintendent, Suri District Correctional Home

Suri District Correctional Home, previously known as Suri District Jail, was built up in 1819. It is learnt that there was a mud-build jail with thatched roof in the year 1793 at Suri in the district of Birbhum during British regime. Subsequently, it was consumed by fire. Then, Collector, Mr. Keating constructed a civil jail. This was also demolished due to old age. The existing brick-built criminal jail (presently Correctional Home) was constructed in 1819. (Source : Birbhum Gazetteers). It has the capacity of lodging 656 male inmates and 18 female inmates.

Inmates are provided legal assistance with the help of the District Legal Services Authority. Some inmates have been trained by the District Legal Services Authority as Para-Legal Volunteers to spread legal awareness among inmates. Various activities to up bring the moral and spiritual aspects of the inmates are carried out on regular basis in collaboration with renowned NGOs. Inmates willing to carry on their academic education are enrolled in various educational boards and write exams conducted by respective boards. There is a study centre of Netaji Subhas Open University for the inmates of the Correctional Home. All major festivals are celebrated inside this Correctional Home. Every month a number of inmates are temporarily released on parole to meet their family at home.

Friends and relatives of the inmates can interview them on week days submitting application for interview along with Xerox copy of Photo Identity Proof.
